Scientific Meeting at the Historical Museum of Crete
The Battle of Crete, a different perspective
As the temporary exhibition "What Remained… Stories of People from the Battle of Crete" drew to a close, the Society of Cretan Historical Studies held a one-day conference on the same subject. It took place in the Amphitheatre of the Historical Museum of Crete on Saturday 18 October 2025, from 9:30 to 14:30.
The invited speakers focused on the period and its aftermath rather than on the military events themselves. They discussed a range of historical issues at length: the unprecedented practice of harsh reprisals against the inhabitants who resisted; Italian propaganda about the troops sent from Rhodes; the ordeals of the prisoners held at the Tympaki camp; and the legacy of the New Zealand soldiers' participation in the Battle.
The papers on the post-war years dealt mainly with the archaeology of the war and present-day collecting and museological practices. They also covered the war's commemorative medals and decorations, its impact on ordinary people of the time, and later oral accounts and memoirs. Other papers examined paintings of the Battle and what they signify, and how the island's public history has handled the events of the German invasion and Occupation.
The one-day conference was open to the public. Afterwards, the curators of the temporary exhibition, Kleanthis Sidiropoulos and Dimitris Skartsilakis, gave a guided tour of it.

A total of 332 original scholarly papers were presented, organised into thematic categories. Within the framework of the Congress sessions, six keynote addresses were presented, 248 oral presentations and 23 poster presentations, while six workshops were conducted across all sections, with a total of 61 presentations.
