The SCHS Library is located on the 3rd floor of the Historical Museum of Crete and hosts approximately 10.000 books including scientific journals and rare editions of the 19th century. Prominent remains the focus on Cretological Studies.
Since its establishment in 1953, the Library has been enriched by important donations, among which those of Agnes Xenaki, the Institutions of Andreas and Maria Kalokairinos, Menelaos C. Parlamas, Achilleas Apalakis, Stylianos Alexiou, Alexis Politis and George Rasidakis stand out for their quality and quantity.
Two invaluable donations to the SCHS have been those of the private library of the renowned Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis, and that of the Cretan politician Emmanuel Tsouderos, allowing the SCHS Library to stand out today, as unique in its kind.
ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS
The SCHS Library also hosts valuable archival collections. Beyond the Toponymic Archive which was compiled with the care of the SCHS Board and Members during the 1950s, significant donations of archival collections such as those of I. Mourellos, I. and G. Mitsotakis, E. Tsouderos, S. Xanthoudides, G. N. Hadjidakis, N. Kazantzakis, and the Archive of the pianist Rena Kyriakou, attract the interest of scholars and researchers from around the world.
