The 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies (13ICCS), following a one-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was held in the city of Agios Nikolaos from Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 October 2022. The Congress was a hybrid event: participation was possible either in person at the conference venue or online via the internet.
The Congress sessions were divided into three sections corresponding to the three major periods in Cretan history: a) Prehistory and Antiquity, b) Byzantium and Venetian Rule, c) Modern and Contemporary History. The main conference themes designated for all sections were "Subversions, ruptures, discontinuities, revolutions" and "Health and sickness in human communities". The languages of the Congress were Greek, English, French, German and Italian.
During the five days of the Congress, 381 scholars participated (295 in person and 86 online), distinguished academics and young researchers from Greece and 20 other countries. A total of 332 original scholarly papers were presented, organised into thematic categories. Within the framework of the Congress sessions, six keynote addresses were presented, 248 oral presentations and 23 poster presentations, while six workshops were conducted across all sections, with a total of 61 presentations. The Congress sessions were open to the public throughout, in person and via live streaming from the Congress website, with very high participation from audiences in Greece and abroad.
The Proceedings of the 13th International Congress of Cretan Studies are published online by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The papers are uploaded gradually, following a review, editing, and formatting process.

The Society of Cretan Historical Studies (SCHS) is systematically involved in organizing conferences and events promoting scholarly discourse. Above all, however, the SCHS established the International Congresses of Cretan Studies (1961) as an institution that it has encouraged for decades. The Congresses have lent great impetus to Cretan Studies, and to this day serve as a cross-disciplinary forum of outstanding significance.
