Cretica Chronica

The Cretica Chronica (Cretan Chronicles), published by Andreas G. Kalokerinos, first appeared in 1947. The editorial board consisted of Bishop Evmenios Fanourakis, Nikolaos Platon, Menelaos Parlamas, Nikolaos Stavrinidis and Vasileios Laourdas. The board's introductory note stated that the aim of the Cretica Chronica was "to strengthen research and promote interest in the history of Crete". The Board believed at the time that there was "a clear need to publish the existing historical material and produce specialized studies through coordinated effort, expressed in systematic archival and periodical publications. Only in this way can the foundation of history be revealed and subjected to scientific examination".

The publication of the Cretica Chronica marked the emergence into public life of a group of intellectuals who would soon form the core of the Society for Cretan Historical Studies, establish the Historical Museum of Crete, and create the International Cetological Congresses. This combined initiative played a decisive role in shaping Cretan Studies.

The Cretica Chronica were published continuously by A.G. Kalokerinos until 1973, totalling twenty-five volumes. Two volumes of the journal were published by the Crete University Press Editions (1986-7) and two more (1988-90), as well as an index volume (1994) by the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion. Since then, members of the academic community have repeatedly called for their systematic publication to resume. In 2009, the Society of Cretan Historical Studies digitized the entire content of the out-of-print first fourteen volumes of the journal, which is now available to scholars online through the Cretan Studies Online project.

Recognizing that the field of Cretan Studies, as it exists today, continues to need an international academic journal, SCHS took on the task of resuming publication of the Cretica Chronica from 2011, on an annual basis. Papers are published following anonymous peer review.
