Publication of CRETICA CHRONICA vol. 41 (2021) dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete

Announcing the publication of volume 41 (2021) of the annual academic journal Cretica Chronica of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The volume contains papers in English and Greek by Ian Frazer, Yannis Skalidakis, Ioannis Prekatsounakis, Nikos Valassiadis, Dimitris Skartsilakis, Georgios Limantzakis, Theo Daskarolis, Vassilis Manoussakis, Kostis Christakis και Giorgos Tzorakis, contributing to the better interpretation and evaluation of the first example of universal resistance against the Axis Powers.

The texts in the volume are the Proceedings of the online Colloquium "Events and Management of Memory: Crete 1941/2021" organized by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June 2021, as part of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Battle. The themes presented and discussed in the Colloquium include the recent bilingual publication in the Testimonies Series Len Frazer, Μια δύσκολη Απόδραση / No Easy Escape, unknown aspects of the photographic documentation of the Battle of Crete, the occupation and Cretan testimonies, the continuities and discontinuities of the war in Crete, the impact of the historical event in Germany, and Sir Arthur Evans’ narrative about the events of those days.

Cretica Chronica 2021 is the 11th volume in the second period of the journal’s publication, which began in 2011, and the 41st volume since the journal’s inauguration in 1947. The Cretica Chronica volumes are available in the shop and e-shop of the Historical Museum of Crete, together with all the publications of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and selected items by local artists based on the collections in its Museums. The sales revenue goes towards supporting the publishing work of the SCHS, the operation of its Museums and the organization of temporary exhibitions, events and free educational programmes for schools.
