International Museum Day & European Museum Night at the Historical Museum

The Historical Museum of Crete, as an open meeting-place for the exchange of ideas – at the service of both the local and the international community – systematically promoting scientific research, education and entertainment, is participating on Friday 18 May in the celebration of International Museum Day on the theme of Hyperconnected Museums. New Approaches, New Publics, and of European Museum Night, organising a full day of events centred on the Museum in “its natural and digital dimension”.

The series of events includes:

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
Friday, 18/5/2018, 9:00-17:00


Free admittance to the Historical Museum of Crete (9:00-17:00). Visitors can share their photos using the hashtag #hmcimd2018. The photos will be uploaded to the Historical Museum of Crete Instagram account www.instagram.com/historical_museum_of_crete

• Short series of thematic tours by the Museum curators (in Greek language), titled Multiculturality in the Collections of the Historical Museum of Crete. 

The programme is as follows:

13:00-13:15 | Tour of the Ottoman Collection by Agisilaos Kaloutsakis, Curator of the HMC Historical Collections.

13:20-13:35 | Tour of the temporary exhibition Diamantis Diamantopoulos. Teratologies. The History of Man, with works from the Zacharias G. Portalakis Modern Art Collection, by Fani Kampani, HMC Museum Educationalist.

13:40-13:55 | Tour of the Ethnographic Collection by Angeliki Baltatzi, Curator of the HMC Ethnographic Collections.

• The new Virtual Tour  of the Historical Museum of Crete and the Menelaos Parlamas Museum of Rural Life (Piskopiano, Hersonissos) will be uploaded to the HMC homepage (www.historical-museum.gr ) on Friday 18/5.


EUROPEAN MUSEUM NIGHT
Friday, 18/5/2018, 20:00-23:00
Admittance: 5 euros

Shortly afterwards, on Friday evening, there follows a live concert by the LoopIA Band (Irida, international repertoire), in the Museum garden at 21:00. The event will be live streamed on the Historical Museum of Crete website (www.historical-museum.gr), in collaboration with the Centre of Infrastructure and ICT Services of the University of Crete, with the aim of broadcasting the event beyond the geographical limits of the city and attracting the interest of the remote public of the HMC.

On Friday evening the Historical Museum of Crete will be open from 20:00-23:00. During this time, visitors can wander round the various exhibitions, enjoy a drink from the Museum bar, and visit the Museum Shop to browse the publications of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and creations by young designers inspired by Museum exhibits.
