The centre of the scene is dominated by Mount Horeb, where Moses received the Tablets of the Law from the hands of God. Its sheer sides are bestrewn with red-roofed chapels and sketes. A rock-cut stairway rises vertically up the precipice to the mountain peak, which is shrouded in grey-yellow clouds. Though these hide the sun, they allow a supernatural golden light to permeate the landscape, thus imparting a sense of awe and an atmosphere charged with divine mystery.
