The artist Sophia Portalaki- Armaou, was born in 1947 in Heraklion, Crete. After an early apprenticeship in icon-painting at the age of fourteen she pursued studies in painting and the art of mosaic at the Athens School of Fine Arts and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1965-1973). The painter’s unceasing interest in the art of icon-painting, led her to the in-depth study of the work of the great masters of the Cretan School of painting (15th and 16th c.). Icons by Sophia Portalaki-Armaou may be found in collections and orthodox churches in Greece, Germany, France, Holland America and Italy. Since 1998 the artist collaborates with various Greek museums, creating copies of icons of the byzantine and post-byzantine era.
