2022 AROUND THE WORLD
02/02/2022
The Historical Museum of Crete and the Social Space of the A & M Kalokerinos Foundation invite you to the temporary exhibition ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΥ | 2022 AROUND THE WORLD, held in the multi-purpose Odysseas Elytis Hall in the Social Space (9 Monis Agarathou Street, exhibition open until 14 February 2022).
2022 AROUND THE WORLD is an original exhibition, the fruit of an anthropological endeavour taking place for the first time with the participation of refugees and migrants, our friends at the Social Space, with the aim of offering a fascinating cultural overview of festive traditions, symbolisms and customs uniting all of humanity.
Shortly before the coming of the New Year 2022, the Historical Museum of Crete conceived the idea of presenting “other” New Years in the form of a bilingual exhibition (Greek and English), since different calendars around the world determine the ritual festivals of many non-Western peoples. With the support of the SCHS/HMC President, Professor Alexis Kalokerinos, the coordination of HMC social anthropologist Aggeliki Baltatzi and social worker Dionysis Kokkonis of the Social Space, and, above all, with the valuable cooperation of the refugees and migrants of our city, we set up an “amateur” anthropological study group at the Historical Museum of Crete. There we investigated the multicultural unfolding of the international celebration of the changing of the year, centered on the anthropogeographical core of each participant’s home country.
The “findings” of the meeting at the HMC have been transformed into an exhibition at the Social Space, taking us on a tour of the New Years to come in 2022, Nowruz, Muharram and Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated in over fifty Asian and African countries.
The exhibition 2022 AROUND THE WORLD is yet another addition to the uninterrupted educational, social and welfare work of the HMC and the Social Space. It also launches a series of quality events and joint activities by the two bodies, of an anthropological and participatory nature, with the aim of contributing substantially to mutual understanding and bringing refugees and migrants closer to local society, encouraging their integration.
