1821. CRETE IN THE GREEK REVOLUTION
The Exhibition becomes a Book

15/12/2021

With the hybrid publication 1821. CRETE IN THE GREEK REVOLUTION, the printed version of the temporary exhibition at the Historical Museum of Crete, the Society of Cretan Historical Studies bids farewell to the bicentenary year 2021.

The open-air version of the Exhibition travelled to the capitals of the regional units of Crete, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon and Agios Nikolaos, from Spring to Autumn 2021. It was installed in key areas of the cities, incorporated in the urban environment in the form of a passageway open to the public 24/7, free of charge. In its “compact” indoor version, the Exhibition was displayed at the Cultural Conference Centre of Heraklion until 17 December 2021. It was presented to the Gymnasium/Lyceum of Pombia in Phaistos Municipality (opened on 19 December 2021).

The book, as a permanent outcome of the Exhibition, seals the tribute to the Bicentenary of the start of the Greek Revolution implemented by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies / Historical Museum of Crete under the auspices of the Greece 2021 Committee, sponsored by Plastika Kritis S.A. and supported by the Region of Crete and the Charitable Institutions of Andreas and Maria Kalokerinou.

Preserving the full texts and images in their thematic units, the book is a faithful copy of the Exhibition, with its texts in Greek and English, its illustrations and its digital dimension with supplementary information provided by QR codes. Highlighting aspects of local history alongside Greek, European and world history, this new publication is also a valuable tool for the local school community, in accordance with established SCHS education policy. The SCHS will send the book free of charge to all primary and secondary schools in Crete.

The texts are written by the scientific team of the Historical Museum of Crete, consisting of the young historians Dimitris Kypriotakis, Maria Kalogeraki, Andreas Kalokerinos and Irini Foukaraki, coordinated by the SCHS President, Professor Alexis Kalokerinos, and the Curator of the HMC Historical Collections, Agisilaos Kaloutsakis. The graphic design is the work of Ariadni Kalokyri (PencilCase), while the volume was printed and bound by Typokreta. The publication was possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Region of Crete, a constant supporter of the activities of the SCHS.

The new SCHS/HMC volume 1821. CRETE IN THE GREEK REVOLUTION is available in the HMC Shop and e-shop.
