Youth activism against dictatorships (Historical Museum of Crete & via zoom, Monday 16.05.2022, 11.30 am)

11/05/2022

The Society of Cretan Historical Studies (SCHS) and the University of Crete Research Center for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences (UCRC) invite you to the hybrid event “Youth Activism against Dictatorships”, to be held on Monday 16 May 2022 at the Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklion. Attendance may be in-person or online via zoom.

The event is organized in the framework of the project “Free your Mind: Youth Activism in Southern Europe in Times of Dictatorship – FYM”, of the European Commission Programme “Europe for Citizens - European Remembrance - REMEM”. The FYM research project is coordinated by Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Portugal) in partnership with the Associação Cultural Ephemera (Portugal), the UCRC of the University of Crete (Greece), the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) and the Society of Cretan Historical Studies | Historical Museum of Crete (Greece). The programme, which began in February 2021 and will conclude in 2022, focusses on the role played by generations of young Europeans in the collapse of the dictatorships in Southern Europe in the 1960s and 1970s.

The event at the Historical Museum of Crete will open with the museum educational activity "Memories and interpretations of the resistance", with the participation of a group of secondary-school students and teachers from the School of European Education of Heraklion and a group of students from the School of Philosophy of the University of Crete. The activity was specially designed for the event by the SCHS museum educators Stella Malliaraki and Ria Mentilidou.

The second part of the event, titled “Youth activism in Southern Europe in times of dictatorship”, addressed to the general public, will start at 11.30 am. Attendance may be in-person at Yannis Pertselakis Amphitheatre, Historical Museum of Crete or online via zoom, by signing up online. This part of the event will open with a brief presentation of the “Free your Mind” project by Professor Maria Koussis of the University of Crete, project coordinator Professor Luís Nuno Rodrigues of the University of Lisbon, and brief presentations by experts from Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. There follows a presentation of the FYM educational activity of the HMC by Professor Eleni Katsarou of the University of Crete and SCHS museum educator Stella Malliaraki. The event concludes with the video presentation of an excerpt from the documentary “It’s Just a Junta. Will it Pass?” by director Fotos Lambrinos, an ERT 2011-2012 production, on the Athens Polytechnic uprising during the Greek dictatorship. The presentation will be framed by eyewitness accounts by Olympios Dafermos, a member of the anti-dictatorship student movement and author of Students and Dictatorship: The Anti-dictatorship Student Movement 1972-1973 (Athens 1999), and social anthropologist Eleni Tsenoglou, a retired teacher in secondary education who experienced events as a school student during the dictatorship. The event will close with a public discussion among the speakers and the audience.

Online attendees will be provided with simultaneous translation from Greek into English. Those attending in person should be aware that the Museum applies current health protocols for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 in its spaces and activities, and the use of a face mask indoors is mandatory.

This public event has received funding from the European Union’s EUROPE FOR CITIZENS programme (Strand 1: EUROPEAN REMEMBRANCE), under the project “FYM - Free your mind: Youth Activism in Southern Europe in Times of Dictatorship” (Project Number: 617561-CITIZ-1-2020-1-PT-CITIZ-REMEM, Grant Decision: Nr. 617561). The public event is carried out in the context of the above project.
