International Conference El Greco: The Cretan Years

An international academic symposium entitled El Greco: The Cretan Years is being held at the Basilica of St. Mark and the Historical Museum of Crete, from Saturday 21st to Monday 23rd July 2014, co-organised by the Regional Government of Crete, the Municipality of Heraklion and the Society of Cretan Historical Studies.

The focal point for the symposium is the less well investigated formative period in Domenicos Theiticopoulos’ artistic activity in Venetian Candia, within the framework of post-Byzantine art.

The symposium participants are leading scholars of the great artist from Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, Japan, Cyprus and Greece.

The symposium’s academic committee comprises Nicos Hadjinocolaou, Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Crete; Maria Constantoudaki, University of Athens Professor of Byzantine Archaeology; and Panayotis Ioannidou, Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Crete.

Symposium languages will be English, Greek and Spanish, with simultaneous interpreting from English and Spanish to Greek, and from Greek to English. The conference will be broadcast via live streaming on the Historical Museum of Crete webpage, courtesy of the University of Crete Communications and Network Centre.

The symposium will open in the Basilica of St. Mark, at 10:00am on Saturday 21st June 2014.
