É.-H. Destelle and Crete

The temporary exhibition É.-H. Destelle and Crete was hosted on the second floor of the Historical Museum of Crete from December 2019 to March 2020. Using original materials from the French officer’s personal archive, kindly donated by his descendants, the exhibition told the story of his activities on Cretan soil and the relationship he developed with the island and the people of the time, both Cretans and Europeans. Personal manuscripts, official documents, photographs, objects and paintings in Destelle’s own hand vividly complemented his diary entries, highlighting the international dimension of the Cretan Question during the transition from the Ottoman world to national restoration. The material was selected by Jean-Pierre Destelle and the exhibition was curated by the scientific staff of the Museum.
