Cretica Chronica

Cretica Chronica, published by Andreas G. Kalokerinos, was first issued in 1947. The editorial board comprised Bishop Eumenios Fanourakis, Nikolaos Platon, Menelaos Parlamas, Nikolaos Stavrinides and Vasileios Laourdas. The board’s introductory note defined the aim of Cretica Chronica as being “to bolster research and galvanize interest in the History of Crete”. At the time, the board judged there was “an obvious … need to publish existing historical material and to present specialist studies via a concerted effort, manifested in systematic archival and periodical publications. Thus alone is the substratum of history revealed and subjected to the scrutiny of scholarship.”
The act of publishing Cretica Chronica marked the emergence into the limelight of a group of intellectuals who were soon to form the core of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies (SCHS), found the Historical Museum of Crete and establish the International Cretological Congresses. This composite undertaking made a decisive contribution to moulding Cretan Studies.

Cretica Chronica was published by A. G. Kalokairinos uninterruptedly until 1973, totalling 25 volumes in all. Two volumes of the periodical were issued by Crete University Press (1986-7), and a further two (1988-90) as well as a volume of indices (1994) by the Vikelaia Municipal Library in Heraklion. Since then, members of the scholarly community have made repeated calls for its reissue on a regular basis. In 2009, the SCHS digitized the entire contents of the journal’s rare first fourteen volumes, which are now available to researchers on the internet, under the terms of the Cretan Studies On-line project.

In judging that the field of Cretan Studies as it currently stands is still in need of an international journal, the SCHS has undertaken to resume publication of Cretica Chronica. Papers are published following anonymous academic review. Publication will be annual.
